I don't think we've seen a character wear jeans in the office before on the show.
- Right! This was the first time. Again, it gets at how eccentric he is.
In your period research, did you come across men wearing jeans in the office ever? Seems like a radically unprofessional move on his part.
- No, it was not common culturally. Actually, Casual Fridays started in America in the 1950s, but it was a custom that wasn't really practiced in its true form until the 90s. Him wearing jeans is, yes, unprofessional, and that's part of his story.
In what way?
- There's a moment with Peggy that you might have caught. She tells him, 'You're like everyone else.' And he replies, 'I've never been accused of that but I really am trying.' He has probably never put on a shirt, tie, and jacket in his whole life. When he pulls together this random outfit, he really is trying to appear professional.

He's the kind of guy who would wear hand-me-downs and shop at Salvation Army. His shirt was from the early Fifties. The madras plaid jacket was also from earlier. And the tie was from the mid-Sixties when ties started to become wider.’
His approach to dressing is much more in tune with the modern style conscious man –hunting down interesting and striking pieces and mixing them up for an effortless but individual look. With his loud paisley ties unrepentantly paired with printed seersucker shirts, Ginsberg also proves that men are just as capable of women of pulling off trends such as clashing patterns."

GQ: Do you think Michael Ginsberg leads a double life? It's a big theme in the show and seems to be hitting very hard right now—obviously with Don, but even with Roger, who's always seemed so consistently himself.
Ben Feldman: I think that a case can be made that every character is struggling with who they are, who they're perceived to be, who they want to be, who they don't want to be. We could sit down and go through every single character and find examples for each one of them, and certainly Michael Ginsberg. He's always been an outsider in this group of people for myriad reasons, not just the Jew thing. He comes home to an extremely different life than everyone else. So yes. I think so much of him is about who he wants to be, or who he's trying to be, and what he's running away from.

GQ: Has playing Ginsberg changed your personal style?
Ben Feldman: I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like it's really embarrassing if you look too much like your character in real life. So in a sense, yeah. I've had to retire plaids. Janie Bryant did that line for Banana Republic, and one of the pieces that I have is the big plaid jacket she designed for them. I thought that was so cool when I got it. But it's just sitting in my closet, because I never want to walk out and have someone go, "Oh, so you're really like that!" [Laughs]
